This week, Twitter changed their famous favourite button from a star to a…heart! Not only that…these hearts will now equate to ‘likes’ rather than favourites!
Twitter have claimed that people have been confused by the star button, especially those who are new to the platform. They released a statement concluding that ‘The heart is a universal symbol that resonates across languages, cultures, and time zones’.
The message Twitter are trying to get across has a strong meaning and is really trying to appeal to our emotions and feelings. They say a heart says more than a star and can convey many different emotions that we are trying to put across.
They introduced the new format in a tweet:
Periscope, Twitter’s live video platform is known for using hearts when people like what they are watching.
Perhaps this was one of the influential factors when it came to making the decision to change things up! Twitter has always been a place for favourites and those little stars, but perhaps it’s time we all embraced change and stood for something that has more of a global symbolism!
On Facebook the like button is pretty clear and people know what you mean by pressing it, the star on Twitter was a bit more general and it is true that you could never be certain of why people were pressing it!
Brands have already starting talking about it on social, Dove is reminding us that as long as you love yourself…a heart or star doesn’t matter:
What do you think?
Are you a fan of the new heart, should we embrace change and come together as a community in the name of Love? Or are you going to miss the classic Twitter that we all knew so well? We can’t wait to see what the future of Twitter has in store for us…bring it on!
