Damn, Daniel: The New Viral Video

If you’ve been on the internet at all this past weekend, the phrase, “Damn, Daniel” is probably already stuck in your head.

Daniel Lara, a student at Riverside Poly High School in California, has become the new internet sensation after his friend Joshua Holz posted a 30 second video of him on Twitter.

The video consists of Holz narrating several short videos of Lara saying, “Damn, Daniel, back at it again with the white vans.” After the video was posted on February 15, it quickly became viral with 290,000 retweets and 370,000 likes on Twitter.

Whether you understand it or not, the internet seems to be having a blast!

For the past week, the internet has been exploding with memes inspired by the post. With the use of social media, brands such as Axe, Clorox and Vans, quickly jumped onto this and used it to their advantage.

People are even selling their white vans on eBay for as much as $25,000!

One of these memes immediately went viral with almost 30,000 retweets and 36,000 likes.

SoundCloud user ‘Suhmeduh’ went one step further by creating a remix of the audio; it has been played 833,000 times. I must admit, it’s actually quite catchy.

Of course Ellen DeGeneres had them on The Ellen Show. On the show, they talk about how it all started and how they’ve been getting attention from girls at the mall. Holz then received a personalized surf board with, “Damn Daniel! I was on Ellen!” and Lara received a lifetime supply of Vans shoes from the company itself.

Almost all viral memes on the internet seem to quickly die down so let’s see how long Lara and Holz get to keep their 30 seconds of fame.

Celebrities and Fans Support Ke$ha on Social Media

The 28 year old recording artist, Ke$ha, has been in a year long legal battle after filing a claim against her producer, known as Dr. Luke. The accusations have included sexual assault and unfair business practices. Ke$ha filed her case in an attempt to break out of the extensive contract she entered into with Dr Luke and Sony, so that she can make her own music with Sony without working with Dr. Luke.

Unfortunately for Ke$ha, Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Shirley Werner Kornreich shot down the injunction that would have seen her cease her exclusive recording partnership with Lukasz Gottwald. This means that Ke$ha will have to fulfill the contract by recording another six albums with the man that allegedly assaulted her.

This case brings to light issues that revolve around the music industry, sexual assault allegations, and contracting business practices.

Other recording artists, writers, and feminist groups who have first hand experience with the creative industry began to reach out to the singer on social media. Lady Gaga, Lena Dunham, Alessia Cara, and Sara Bareilles are just a few names the publicly showed support.

The hashtag #freekesha has been trending on all social media platforms, and there has been a stir of people trying to instigate boycotting Sony.

Super Bowl 2016: This is Beyonce’s World, and We Are Just Living In It

Super Bowl Sunday was viewed by over one hundred million people this year. Viewers come for the game, the commercial, the snacks, or the halftime show. This year the Pepsi Halftime Show brought to the stage Coldplay, Bruno Mars, and Beyonce. Coldplay started the show with the infamous “Viva La Vida” and a technicolor spectacular that extended to the edges of the stadium. Bruno Mars then jumped in with his crew, giving us a close up look at some of the moves from “Uptown Funk”. Lastly, Beyonce appears like a flash of lightning with a whole formation of dancers, and a marching band. Some reviews claim that Coldplay was underwhelming, and that Beyonce stole the show. Beyonce does have a way of commanding attention, but she is also a master of social media strategy.

On Instagram she begins her story by showing images from her secretly released music video, “Formations”. Just one day before the highly anticipated, Super Bowl Sunday.

She shared behind-the-scene type videos that featured her crew, and the preparation that led up to the big moment. One interview in the video quotes, “You dont get a chance to half ass it. You have to go full out everytime, and you know why? Because she’s going full out. When you think you can’t push yourself anymore, you can. Theres still more to go”. Her determination serves as motivation for her fans, and everyone she works with.

Not only was Beyonce using the Super Bowl as a platform to promote her own projects, she was publicly taking a stand with the Black Lives Matter Movement by having dancers and musicians behind her that emulated the Black Panther Party of Self Defense that played a role during the Civil Rights Movement. This resulted in a fairly politically charged performance, that was seen by millions.

The Show Must Go On: Vanessa Hudgens pays tribute to her father with her performance as Rizzo in “Grease: Live Performance”

The much anticipated “Grease: Live Performance” aired Sunday, January 31st, on FOX. The three hour, live television special was well received by fans and stars alike. Congratulatory posts were made all over twitter and social media.

However, there were also posts expressing condolences to Vanessa Hudgens after she announced in that her father had passed from stage four cancer just earlier that morning.

Hudgens proved her strength and talent that evening as she carried on with the show, and gave a chilling performance of “There Are Worse Things”. Needless to say, her dad would be very proud of her.

At the end of the credits it read, “In loving memory of Greg Hudgens, June 22, 1950 – January 20, 2016.” Of course, this was at the very end of the show when Vanessa pretty much won it all. Not only did she perfectly embody Rizzo, but she nailed both her solos. Grease Live was a display of true theatre and an amazing cast and crew.

For decades, Calvin Klein has been known for creating controversial and provocative campaigns that feature the hottest models and celebrities. This past tuesday, the new Calvin Klein global advertising campaign was announced on twitter with a link to a video featuring a variety of celebrities.

While maintaining the classic Calvin Klein image, similar to the infamous 1992 shoot with Mark Wahlberg, this campaign adds a new element. Not only does it  allow for well-known role models to project their own voice, but asks the audience to speak up as well. One of the reasons for success of this campaign is that it creates an interactive user experience that involves followers from all corners of the world.

In 2015, the success of Justin’s first campaign with Calvin Klein put the brand on the social media map. Now it seems that minimally-clothed Justin Bieber is back by popular demand.

Kendall Jenner and Justin Bieber are two of the most influential young celebrities. They both have millions of followers across social media platforms. While the campaign also features celebrities and artists such as Fetty Wap, Abby Lee Kershaw, Kendrick Lamar, and FKA Twigs, Justin and Kendall are clearly dominating the discourse of the campaign online. The “fill in the blank” campaign adds a personal touch, and allows fans and followers to personalize the campaign for themselves.

Various images has been shared on the celebrities’ personal social media accounts, which reaches out to fans on a more intimate platform than a billboard or television commercial. This time, Calvin Klein has experimented on a large scale with the user experience and way we interact with celebrities and marketing campaigns. It worked.
